The main focus of the ministry of The Church at Asheville is to reach the lost and encourage the saints of Asheville and Western North Carolina.  Along with spreading the Gospel we encourage our members to be involved with feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and giving back to those who are in need.

We encourage you to become involved in one or more of these ministries.  Reach out with your hands and your heart to make a difference.  Its not just the people you are ministering to that will be changed, you will feel changed as well.

Disability Ministry
Connecting the Differently Abled

Everyone Belongs: Discover How to Meet the Needs of the Differently Abled in Your Neighborhood

At The Church at Asheville, we believe every single person is created in the image of God and possesses unique gifts and a vital role to play in our community of faith. Our Friends Ministry is dedicated to ensuring that individuals and families impacted by disabilities, mental health challenges, or special needs are fully welcomed, valued, and able to participate in every aspect of church life.

We are committed to removing barriers—both physical and social—and building a culture of inclusion where everyone experiences God's love and the fellowship of believers.

We want to thank our dear friend Teresa Williams for her great love for all God's children and her resilient dedication to be the voice for the voiceless.  It is because of her that we are offering this conference.  It is because of her helping us to understand disability better that we are praying for every body of Christ to open their arms to people with disabilities of any kind.

Russ Duncan Bio

I’m Russ Duncan, the North Carolina office Ministry Relations Manager. I’m a native of North Carolina and graduate of NC State (go Pack). I now live in Rock Hill, SC with my wife Kate and 5 of our children. Before coming to Joni and Friends, I taught high school math for 24 years. I have also served as a church elder for 15 of those years. That time as an elder gave me a great love for Christ’s Church. I am blessed to be able to provide churches with resources and training, allowing them to fulfill their mission as it includes people living with disability. I also get to connect churches and like-minded disability ministries to each another through disability networks. These networks allow for collaboration, encouragement, and support in the area of disability ministry. Feel free to reach out at russ.duncan@joniandfriends.org with any questions. I would be glad to serve you!

ABCCM
(Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry)

We support ABCCM through volunteer opportunities, consistent giving, regular pray support, and attending events.  Learn more about this incredible ministry called ABCCM . . .

ABCCM is generously supported by over 300 churches of all denominations and 6,000+ trained volunteers and provides emergency assistance to anyone in need regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, or disability. ABCCM stimulates doing together what individual congregations and individuals cannot do separately. While responding to meet emergency needs, we develop strategic plans to address root causes of poverty, take steps to achieve independent living skills and restore lives in the community. We accomplish this through these ministries (click on the ministry that interests you):

Haywood Street Community Development

Dignity through dwellings, connection through community.

Haywood Street Community Development is a sister nonprofit to Haywood Street Congregation.

The congregation began in 2009 as a ministry of radical inclusion in the homeless corridor of downtown, a wide embrace for folks excluded elsewhere, particularly residents with no place to call home. After more than a decade of sharing life with and among this community, a vision began to develop for deeply affordable housing grounded in the Haywood Street ethos — where giving and receiving are encouraged; where the boundaries of “us and them” are trespassed; where strangers become neighbors; and where each person is reminded of their sacred worth.

Haywood Street took a significant step in 2020 to form a distinct nonprofit with its own bylaws and board of directors to focus on this work. This is Haywood Street Community Development.
